Dr. Anthony Atala is the Founding Director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, the Chair of Urology at the Wake Forest School of Medicine, and the Director of the US Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine. His team developed the first lab-grown organ to be implanted into a human and he currently oversees a team of over 400 researchers who are working to develop cell therapies and engineer replacement organs and tissues. Fifteen applications of technologies developed in Dr. Atala’s laboratory have been used clinically, and he has been named by Nature Biotechnology as one of the top ten translational researchers in the world, and by Scientific American as one of the most influential people in biotechnology.
